(or, Making mail without losing your shirt)
Years ago I printed out a really good smithing guide, up to triv 132. I hadn't looked for it since. I was dismayed to find that I didn't save an electronic copy, it is now hard to find. I did manage to find three versions, revs 3, 4, and 6. (I'd been using Rev 5)
As a public service I link them here.

Well ... a combination of conversations in /gu and my emerging need to fix my own smithing. Yep.

I like those guides! Very similar to our own guides from Franz, instigated by Aderon. (

Basically I was
lazy
and had "some plat" (which is relative, I'm sure) I basically skipped the apprentice stage of the guide and went straight to banded (sheets are only 1 pp per) and skipped needles and did ornate and then Fine Plate for Jugo's 8th shawl. Less vendors to visit overall. 4-6 total vendors in the whole thing versus who knows how many for the fully economical guide.
I do agree that people should NOT skip Ornate, as I have heard some people do. The padding cost and/or farming can be a pain.
I probably should get my brewing up to 220 (190 atm) so I can do the tempers for Gud's smithing (192 unmodded, 220 modded atm) so we have someone that at least has 243 smithing (modded) after he is done with ethereal items. I think doing the enchanted velium stuff in the guide would lead to Gud having 250 (or 252 whichever it is) smithing and thus able to do Sheets for us with the best skill possible in the game. I used up all my velium for Jugo's 8th shawl, though.

Just giving you a heads up that the enchanted velium bits are not in the game because they were implemented with the Grand Robe of the Oracle quest. Otherwise, I would have been farming the velium bits instead of the shadowscream horrors!

Thanks, Gud. I also found out we cannot do the enchanted velium which is why my smithing stopped where it did. Not that I won't revist maxing blacksmithing in the future, but I want to max tailoring first.
