A nice map to track the spill. Yes, I'm being effected by it, I've seen oil on local beaches. And it gets worse.

Many places are doing drives to help recovery efforts, if you can donate any small amount. Please think about it.

My fiance is and environmental engineer and was actually out working on the spill, and in the process of coming back. She comes back with some very interesting stories, and hospitalizing sunburns.

One such occurence is that they have trouble keeping engineers and workers employed more than a few weeks, since they're working in the middle of the ocean in 95+ degree weather. What's more ridiculous is working on that spill right now is one of the highest paying jobs you can get now...upwards and beyond of 40+ an hour if you convert it, but you're working complete overtime, in the sun, with no shade, and hot water. BP is shelling out ridiculous amounts of money, if you ask for toilet paper, they give you a truck load and move on to the next person. As I said a lot of what they're doing is trying to keep the really talented engineers working, because it sucks out there.

There are a lot of drives and community pushes on the home side, but it's going to come down to those fellas to get things done

I live on the Atlantic side, but it effects all Floridians, resorts have had in upwards of 50,000 vacation cancellations in a state that is highly dependent on tourism, especially in the southern ends.

Like I said last night, this is the best opportunity we'd ever get to re-form a conservation corps like the one that was so instrumental in ending unemployment during the depression of the '30s. There are a lot of idle hands that could be put to work there. Is there anyone providing training for volunteers or people whose skills aren't quite what is called for?

There are several volunteer groups dedicated to cleanup...the University of Florida which is where I study and teach is running a summer program to train students to clean up animals and whatnot, but they will have to get there/take a semester off on their own accord. Then there's programs like Hands Across the Beach that seem to be hosting fund raising efforts to support training and whatnot. From what I know (Cousins and Aunts and Uncles live in New Orleans) on that side of the house there is a surprisingly low amount of call for community cleanup type deals, you have to really hunt to find them that is. It seems to be our way though to wait until the last minute to get anything together

I have a feeling though once it hits in force, we're going to get a before unprecedented cleanup effort. Unfortunately, like Haiti and Katrina we will probably see a lot of news about people going over there untrained and doing more harm than good....I hope some sort of infrastructure gets put in place to train people on how to help...
