I get home from work around 4pm, (working earlyish, soyay) I have a spare CPU heatsink lying around, and it's better than theone in my case.
I decide to take a few mins and swap em. I even have some thermal paste!
Iput it on, and with a mental lapse and a good dose of stupidity, I dotoo much, and don't notice till after I have the heatsink back on! Itoozed over the edge, and actually got onto the CPU pins! CRAP!
Quick: Advice on cleaning it! Google! Thread here says use alcohol and paper towels. Easy!
Papertowels snag pins, don't notice right off, and do a bit more... Nowthere's dozens of pins bent out of whack! I spend several hoursstraightening a good number, and develop a nice headache for squintingso long.
I try several other things to get it straight. But to know avail. I killed my CPU.
Ireason on this, I need a new CPU, my existing one still costs around100 bucks... So, 100 bucks to get an identical one, effectively justthrowing away the money, or upgrade!
Yeah, you know me. Upgrade!Newegg has an AM2+ 9850 Phenom Quad core (a higher end one!) for $208in an OEM. Awesome, it's ordered.
I then turn my attention to mysecondary PC, a cheapo machine I built for about 300 bucks 2 years ago.AMD 3000+, 1 gig of Ram, no vid card. I figure I can pop one of my8800GTX's in there, and be okay.
Nope. the motherboard is notdesigned for double wide cards, the PCI slots are too close.Resignedly, I just pop it back up, and start to patch SWG. (it wasalready installed) Played at 1280x800, the lowest widescreen res, gotabout 15fps.
I was actually off work, butwith a gimped PC, not much to play. Dug through my game disks and sawthe Dune 2 CD, 1992 classic. Played through the Atredies campaign...alot shorter than I remember.
I decided to give AOC a shot, justfor laughs. After taking forever to patch, I gave it a shot, minimizedeverything possible, running in 1024x768, averaged 2.5 frames persecond, occasional spikes all the way to 3!
Thursday (today, as I post this)
Got home around 4 again, and my processor had arrived!
I eagerly popped it in, booted it up, and... nothing.
Fans spun, et al, but... nothing.
I thought about it, frustrated at my luck. Then realized... it probably needs a BIOS update!
But,how do you make a bios update to a PC that doesn't boot? Okay, need aprocessor that will work. My brothers PC has the same socket type, sothats okay.
Need a boot disk right? I seem to be set in my oldways, as I went hunting for a floppy drive. Found one and hooked it up.Dug out a box of old disks. After about a dozen failures to detect adisk in the drive, I figured out that the drive must be dead.
After some thinking, I realized I dont NEED a boot disk! I can boot off of my windows DVD easy enough!
I just need to copy the files to a CD, and tada!
Wait... my DVD drive isn't a DVD-R! It has NO WRITE CAPABILITY!
Okay,I can transfer the files to my brothers PC, and burn it from theretomorrow afternoon... But... I can't see his computer under NetworkNeighborhood... and he can't see me!
So, I spent another hour or so messing with that. No go.
After that, I decided to quit for the night, it's peeved me off since I got home.
Ihave 2 options I can do tomorrow: I can take my DVD drive out of mydead PC, and plug it in here (will also have to get a disk burningprogram installed.) Or, download the files from the web onto mybrothers PC and burn from there.
I'll likely do the latter, too many screws to undo the drive. Then I can pull my brothers PC apart, and try to get mine going...
??? Hope it goes better.
Two things I'm praying to not happen.
1) Kill my Mobo by screwing something up.
2)kill either of the processors. (my brother would kill me if I killedhis, and I think I'll kill myself if I destroy this one...)
Wish me luck!
