Hello there and welcome to the January 2007 Letter to the players!
search for Asheron intensifies as the people of Dereth continue to seek
out his location. Through the gathering of various clues we have
discovered that Asheron is somewhere on the planet Bur. The problem we
have now is how do we get to this distant world and what do we do once
we are there? Who will help us find Asheron and bring him back home?
January Live OpsThe
voices of the town criers ring out across the land, announcing that
Prince Borelean Strathelar will be attempting to summon a portal to the
world of Bur in an attempt to find Asheron, who is suspected to be in
the clutches of the vile Falatacot. All men and women of stout heart
are asked to assist if they can, as he believes that there may be
opposition from the Falatacot and their servants. King Varicci has
stated publically that he will neither support nor hinder this effort,
feeling it beneath his notice, and that individuals loyal to Viamont
may choose to support this effort if they wish.
In the past,
players have asked for a schedule when we run important, story-based
live-ops. We do listen, and so we are providing the schedule of the
various runs of the Portal to Bur live-op. All live-ops will run at 10
PM Eastern Standard Time. The dates of the live-op are as follows:
January 22: Leafcull
January 23: Solclaim
January 24: Thistledown
January 25: Morningthaw
January 29: Wintersebb
January 30: Frostfell
January 31: Harvestgain
February 1: Verdantine
February 2: Darktide
note that Prince Borelean will want the portal site as prepared as
possible on the day of the ritual. If the site is not ready, there may
be delays so that the portal site may be prepared. As for what
constitutes preparedness, we encourage players to log into the game and
Caul Isle XPAfter reading feedback from
players on the forums as well as speaking to the team, we feel the XP
yield on the Caul should be returned to its original numbers. A couple
of years ago the xp was lowered because it was too high. We had
originally said this would not make it in until the February event;
however the team was able to make this adjustment for the January event
Housing timer clarificationThe
message that players get about the timer on housing can be a bit
confusing. The message that players got before was: Housing cannot be
purchased by accounts less than 15 days old. This message has been
changed to: You may not purchase housing until your account has been
active on this game world for 15 days. This will hopefully clear up any
confusion regarding the purchase of housing.
the Finding Asheron string of quests, players are not informed they are
working towards accessing the location of Asheron. This has been
changed and the rumors players get for the quests now allude to them
having more of a purpose, as well as clarifying the level breaks on the
There was an issue with one of the decoy goblets on the

the actual goblet players needed to get, This was causing confusion to
some people running the quest. This has been fixed and the description
is no longer the same.
are game changes that we are thinking about for upcoming events. We
cannot guarantee when or even if these changes will be added to the
game, as scheduling and priorities can change. These changes are in
addition to the new quests, dungeons, and items we will be adding to
the game. Each month we will be discussing one new in concept topic, in
order to give you as much information about the item that we can.
In-Game Mail SystemWe
want to continue to update Asheron's Call with more features that allow
the gameplay experience to evolve. To that end, one of the things we
are investigating is the addition of an in-game mail system. This would
work in the same way that it does in most other games. You would be
able to send a limited number of items, money, or text notes to other
players online or offline. Ideally this system would work by simply
clicking on special mailboxes located throughout the landscape to open
your mail interface. Right now this is still in the investigation stage
of development, but it is something that we would love to make
available to our players.
So there are just some of the things we
have in store for Asheron's Call in January and beyond. Please remember
that along with everything listed here, there are several new quests
and exciting things going into the game for the January event.
Greetings and welcome to the December Letter to the Players.
the last month we saw King Varicci took his assault to the next level.
Through some form of dark design, King Varicci was able to acquire and
use a new type of weapon to kill Antius Blackmoor. What will Queen
Elyssa's reaction to this be? Will she send out an immediate force to
seek revenge? Or will she be too upset at the loss of someone so
important to her?
New for DecemberAfter
gathering feedback from the players, the changes to the Temples of
Forgetfulness and Enlightenment have gone in this month. We feel these
changes will help both new and old players make changes to their
characters while also not allowing anyone to abuse the abilities
granted by these temples. The following is a list of how the timers
will be changed when you go to the temples after the December event

Hotkey issue that was causing players to lose their save hotkey
selections has been resolved. The items that players put in the hotkey
slots should now stay there after they log off.
Players will be
able to turn in their Glenden Wood Recall Orb for a scroll of the same
spell. This will allow players to still have the recall without having
to have the orb which can cause players to get stuck in combat mode.
winter season is here and once again snow has started to fall. This
seasonal change also means that some creature spawns will change
accordingly. Scarecrows and Pumpkin Golems have been removed from the
landscape. Instead players will find an increasing amount of Snowmen
spawning throughout the land.
With the death of Antius, the
people of Dereth have realized that a change is in the air. This has
prompted them to take action. The town of Yanshi has finally rebuilt
and has been fortified. You can find the new town near the Yanshi
festival grounds. There has also been a memorial built there for the
great Antius Blackmoor. Deep below the memorial, Antius lays in his
final resting place. The citizens of Dereth may still go and pay their
respects if they already haven't done so.
The invasion of
Glenden Wood appears to have been pushed back, thanks to the aid of the
brave people of Dereth. The Royal Captains have now moved in and have
secured the area. Though there are still reports of some Viamontian
activities in the area. Speaking to Tomo Genza may yield more
information on this.
some the game changes we are thinking about for the upcoming months in
Asheron's Call. We cannot guarantee when- or even if – any of these
changes will be added to the game, as scheduling and priorities can
change. These changes are in addition to the new quests, dungeons, and
items we'll be introducing in each monthly event. Your feedback on
these topics is particularly valuable.

Ashes and Dust
King Varicci II strode down the hallway, followed by a retinue of
robed councilors and huge, armored bodyguards. The clank of their
footfalls on the bare stone floor was the only sound in the long, dark
stretch of corridor. This remote section of the tunnel complex beneath
Sanamar had been given over to a legion of mages and scholars, all
laboring to fulfill the King's very ambitious demands.
stopped in front of a huge door, constructed of thick slabs of oak,
bound with bands of steel and pyreal, and carved all over with
protective symbols. Varicci raised his hand, as if to shove the door
open, then paused as if remembering something. He grabbed the stout
bronze knocker and, very slowly and deliberately, knocked three times.
The sounds boomed and echoed down the long corridor.
After a few
seconds, the door creaked inward and a bent, sallow man in ragged robes
stood before them. "Master Darigo," said the King. "We have come to
examine the fruits of your labor."
"Please enter and be welcome, Your Majesty." Darigo bowed
deeply and turned to allow the King's group to come inside.
the door was a large, circular room. The fringes of the room were
filled with arcane magical devices and paraphernalia, the tools of the
dozen mages who worked daily on one of the King's most important
projects. In the center of the room was a stone pedestal, engraved
with ancient, alien symbols of blood magic. A malevolent indigo glow
emanated from something long and thin on top of the pedestal.
Varicci sniffed the air. "It smells like a storm just hit in here."
"We completed the final enchantment not five minutes ago, great King. His Majesty has exquisite timing."
snorted. "If I had impeccable timing, we wouldn't be trapped on this
benighted world, battling emboldened Bloodless led by an upjumped
peasant." Ignoring the other mages in the room, he grabbed Darigo by
the arm and marched towards the pedestal. Forced along by the King's
heavy hand, Darigo shuffled as quickly as he could to keep up with the
King's steps. A few of the King's more courageous or curious
councilors followed. The rest stood well back, fear in their eyes as
they beheld the darkly glowing pedestal.
Upon closer inspection,
the object atop the pedestal was wreathed in swirling tendrils of dark
energy. "Is it safe to touch?" Varicci asked. When Darigo nodded, he
reached out and gingerly grasped the thing, held it up to the light.
"And this thing... will work? You are sure?" He locked eyes with the
master mage, watching his eyes for any hint of uncertainty.
nodded emphatically. "The enchantment has been properly applied and
bound. Count Dardante's expertise, especially his modifications to the
design of our binding circle, proved to be crucial. But as we
expected, our abilities are limited by our incomplete knowledge. The
enchantment is so strong and so terrible that the binding will only
survive one use."
Varicci nodded. "One use will serve. For
now." He held the object up high in front of his face, turning it in
his hand. The light coming off it washed against the walls of the
chamber, covering everything with an unsettling purple glow. Varicci
smiled. It was a savage and wolfish smile, one that promised pain for
someone or something else. "I will name you... Heartbreaker."
placed the object very carefully back in its place on the pedestal.
"Excellent work, Master Darigo. You and your colleagues will be well
rewarded. But this is no excuse to slow your efforts. This is but the
first step. I expect that the translators will have more research
texts for you by week's end. Not to mention the artifact that Master
Malsivir has located. We expect great advances, once he has brought it
With that, Varicci turned and strode briskly out of the
room. His retinue fell into formation behind their monarch as the
mages all bowed to the King's retreating back.
Varicci led the
group towards the farthest end of the hall, towards a staircase flanked
by a pair of monstrous Knights. The stairs led down into a dank warren
of tunnels and cells, the Chambers of Vivimancy. Here was where
traitors and particularly dangerous criminals were given over to the
King's mages, to serve as experimental fodder. Many of the Knights
currently serving in the King's legions had ended their previous lives
in these very chambers.
The King led his party to the far end of
the longest tunnel, to a door made entirely of steel. A small sliding
panel was built into the door's frame at head height, to allow the
gaolers to look into the cell at the prisoner within. Varicci slid
aside the panel. A pair of dully glowing red eyes looked back at him.
"Hello, Commander," Varicci murmured in a soft voice. "We've
made you your toy. We're almost ready for your big moment."
