[Short stories from the life of Lilly, Jaggie and company. ]

This event took place, early, on the following morning after the first attack on Cog.

"Hey," Lilly waved to Cog, as she walked into the back room of the tavern. She wore one of her new dresses that Sigil had made for her. It was pretty, but Cog never mentioned this too her, it was his favourite colour of green, like his own plating.

Cog nodded in return while unlocking liquor cabinet doors below the bar. "Good morning, Lilly. If you give me a moment I will have the breakfast menu ready for you, this morning. Would you like coffee or tea before hand?"

Lilly shook her head, declining. "Actually, I came here to see you."

"Hmm?" Cog gave a slight grunt and began cleaning down the bar. He had gotten new dish cloths this morning, along with new cleaners. His bar would shine tonight. So clean. Always must be clean.

"It's about what happened last night. Did you want to talk about it?"

Cog stopped cleaning and looked at his regular. She had that face. The one she used when she wanted something. Generally the patrons blabbered to him about their problems, this one was working it the other way around. He looked away from her and continued cleaning.

Lilly's face fell when she didn't get a response, "You know I hear things, Cog. I can help if you let me."

"I'm fine," he said.

"Please? Whatever it is these guys have against you, you know I can help. If you owe them money, I can pay it."

"I said I'm fine," Cog slammed his fist on the bar. The sound echoed off the high ceilings. Lilly simply stared at him, her face growing more and more concerned has the seconds passed in silence. Cog stared down at the large dent he had placed into his precious bar's counter top. He huffed and began rubbing out the scuff marks.

"Cog...It's alright. Gambling isn't something to be ashamed of. You can stop it, you just need help. Please let me help you."

Assuming. Sure he'd been caught for gambling before, but it wasn't something he regularly talked about and no one had any right to be talking about it behind his back either. Correct or not, Lilly had no right to assume what was happening.

"If you want anything, ask Aramel," Cog tossed his cleaning cloth onto the counter and stomped through the doors leading to the kitchen. Without even looking at her he called back, "My bar is closed."

Lilly stared at the swinging doors. Another patron of the bar stared over at her, his eyes still blurry from a drunk from the night before. "But Cog..."Lilly frowned,"Skully doesn't open for another hour..."

__After the second attack___

“How's the ankle? Heard you broke it kicking on iron bars.”
Lilly frowned but kept her displeasure of seeing Jaggie entering her hospital room to herself. Relationships were still rocky but they had worked out a lot of preciously unresolved issues and had come to a agreement of sorts. They now shared work loads. Lilly handling CoinLord affairs when Jaggie sought artifical attention with house Cannith, while Jaggie handled paperwork and personnel assignments during the late hours or when Lilly's attention was needed for her commitments to house Phiarlan. Difficult going, but it worked. “Only a small fracture. They already fixed it.” They being a Jorasco healer.
“You're eye is looking better.”
“Yeah,” she nodded, her left eye was foggy but no longer completly white, “once we got out of the null it started to come back. Still cant hear anything from my ear, on that side, but they till me everything should be back to normal in the morning.”
Jaggie sat at the edge of Lilly's bed, paying no mind to the women's discomfort or the creaking of the wooden frame. A shallow, thin glass jar rested beside the bed. Jaggie studied it's powdered crystal contents. The deep purple of the substance was similar to the gem stone that hung from the warforged's neck. “They get that from you?”
Lilly nodded again, taking the jar away from the 'forged and moving it to a night stand on the other side of the bed. “Coughed up some of it too. They're pretty sure it's a side effect from being in the null field. They're fairly sure I'm fine now but they'll be bringing someone in to caste a new stone to flesh, just to be sure. How are the others?”
“Fine from what I can tell. Having trouble getting Cog to talk, but everyone else seems to have gotten out okay.” Jaggie got up and walked about the room, poking at a framed painting of what appeared to be a bowl full of kuryeva berries. “Tunnels to the Hall, Storm Plaza, and the tavern, along with a number of other locations have been closed off, at least for the time being. A sweep is being done to find any more traps and such. Once we figure out how they got in there, we're open them up again.”
“Sounds good. Any word from the CoinLords yet?”
“Not yet, but I'm sure they'll be snapping at each others necks in the morning. You sure it's the Bilge Rats that did it?”
“Can't say with all certainty but I don't know of any other groups that keep wererats in their company.”
“Odd. They normally keep to the harbour.”
“Yeah. Well, wherever we ended up I wouldn't be surprised if it was the harbour.”
“Any idea on how they got those devices?”
Lilly shrugged, “no, but if you could get more rodent traps for the Hall that would be good. They may be using rats as spies.”
“Rats?”
“Hai-I mean yes. Just before everything happened we were in the tavern and there was this giant rat...Just..Watching us...Someones dog, and this ferret looking construct, scared it off and it ran into the tunnels. At least, I think that's where it went.”
“Could be how they found the tunnels in the first place,” Jaggie mused.
“Maybe, but why have those teleportation traps? Hardly anyone knows of those tunnels, let alone uses them. They could have come and gone as they pleased and no one would have been the wiser.”
“True. I don't kow. Maybe-” Jaggie paused as a halfling nurse knocked on the door.
“Dravago d'Vadalis is here now miss Lilly. Should I bring him in?”
Lilly glanced at Jaggie.
“Go ahead,” Jaggie gave a slight nod and headed towards the door. “ Just get me a full report when you can, and I'll contact Zaabon for you.”
“Don't. I already sent a messenger.”
“Far enough. Pardon,” Jaggie stepped back and excused herself as Dravago, who was almost a head taller then the warforged, nearly bowled her over. “Oh, how are you-”Jaggie gestured to the room.
“Paying for this? Don't worry. I'm covered,” Lilly waved her and the nurse off, opening her arms and setting her attention fully to Dravago. “I'm fine, Love. I'm fine. It's okay.”
Jaggie and the nurse got out before things became to personal.

“She should be just fine, Guild Master,” the nurse gave Jaggie her most professional smile, the kind that never shows any teeth or much in the way of true emotion. “But we'll want to keep her over night, just to be sure.”
“Understandable,” Jaggie paused as she walked passed Lilly's medical sheet hanging from a clipboard on the wall. “Is that true?”
The nurse's eyes followed down Jaggie's pointing hand, to the note attached to the clipboard. “Oh, we think so. Still to early to know for certain but considering she's a polymorph and the anit-magic field didn't change her back to her true state, it makes sense. Her doctor will run a few tests tomorrow before releasing her.”
“Hmm.. Well..” Jaggie's lips turned up into a smile at the corners of her metal mouth. “If it's true send her my congratulations.”

((Last Sul))

City bells rang the morning hour. Outside the world was slowly coming to life. Outer gates opened to welcome in traders, farmers, and fish sellers. Stalls opening their doors. Mats, rolled out to display wears. Another hour and the market quarter would be crowded and filled with the sweat, heat and noise of life.
Dravago mumbled groggily, rolled over and began struggling out from under the bedsheets. “Morn'n, love. Time to get up.” He shook Lilly's arm gently. “Come on, babe. You need to get up.”
Lilly responded by shrugging off his affections, followed by curling up into a tight ball.
“You can't keep missing any work, lily pad.” Dravago tugged the bedsheets away from her. Normally she'd put up a fight...
Lilly opened one tired, lonely looking eye. She looked pale and more then just tired, she looked sick.
“Are you okay? Bad dreams again?” She'd been getting a lot of bad dreams lately, over the last few weeks. Understandable, considering, but she normally bounced back up by now.
She nodded at his inquirer and shut her eyes again. Dravago wrapped himself around her, planting a kiss on her forehead. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Lilly sighed softly, wiggling away from him. Dravago was ready to give up and get out of bed when she lightly touched his hand. She reached up and hugged him, refusing to let go. Dravago hugged back, stroking her long wavy hair. He felt moisture on his shoulder where Lilly's face was buried in the crook of his neck. He held her closer. “It's okay. Just a bad dream. You're okay,” he soothed. She shook her head no and Dravago had to push her away to look into her sad pale eyes “What's wrong?”
She hid her face back into his neck and remained quiet for a time while she rubbed sleep and silent tears from her eyes. Her back straightened and her shoulders tightened for a moment while she built up the strength to murmur a cracked whisper,”I'm pregnant.” She didn't know how else to tell him so she simply said it.
Dravago's heart skipped a beat as he held onto her. His thoughts and actions stunned by the two words Lilly had managed to speak.
Lilly waited for him to say something, anything. She began to shiver, drawing her arms back and hugging her belly. “I mean..We-...We never talked about this..I-...I don't..” She looked every bit the frightened girl that she was.
“How-How long have you known?”
“Two days... Jorasco...They.. umm.. Suspected when-.. After...” She winced having realized she was pressing her long fingernails to deeply into her sides. “They couldn't be sure.. Till now.”

Dravago took her hands into his, kissing the tips of each finger. Slowly kissing up her arms and shoulders. There was a shine to his eyes. A hunger, a joy, an excitement that washed away her uncertainties and fears. Soon she couldn't remember nor understand why she waited as long as she did to tell him.

The stables could wait. Another missed practice wouldn't hurt.

Six months can slip by so fast.....
~~~
"Who's Auroin'na?" I said while turning the letter to inspect its back. No extra notes. Outside of the papers expensive qualities there wasn't much more indication to where or who sent the letter. Just a name. The letters contents however suggested someone had been reading prophecies and was  putting a great deal of thought and study into its meanings.
I came to the same conclusion has Jaggie when she said, "A dragon."
She was inspecting her own letter from Auroin. She held another in her other hand that was addressed to the guild has a whole. She walked to the post-it wall, metal feet thunking, and stuck a pin to the guilds letter. "I take it we all got the same letter then?" She said.
Nklos and Smudge nodded. They had been hearing and seeing parts of a dragon prophecy, playing out these past months. Even I had seen parts of one scrawled on notes covered in charts and names, in Jaggie's office while she was away, tending to the needs of the shut-in Stormlords.
Only she and the Iron Watch ever seemed allowed pass threw the Coin Lords gates. It seemed like ages  since the last time anyone had even seen one of the cities figure heads. Letters, orders, and decrees still came out though. Often threw Jaggie's mouth while on top the city walls.
It was putting a toll on her. Maybe the others didn't see it yet, but I could. The stiffness in her movements. Her growing lack of enthusiasm. She rarely smiled anymore. Her was becoming has inanimate has a stone.
She looked at me and I realized I had been staring at her for to long, "Yes?"
I looked away. "Just thinking. Do we know what this Heart or Twin could be? I could check inventory logs. Maybe something in the treasury?"
"From this letter, sounds more like we're looking for a person, or, well, people." Now it was Nklos with the stoney face.
"I could check the library then? See if any of those old newspaper clippings or journals, related to the guild, say anything about a heart or-" I only stopped talking because the little martial artist inside my thought a kick to my lungs was in order.
Smudge had moved forward though I waved her off. This was becoming a normal thing for me. Clinging to my ribs while making sure a firm wall was next to me to lean on. "It's fine. They're just impatent to get out." Two more months. I could survive to more months of this right? Admittedly I was getting pretty tired of being tired all the time. Likely that wouldn't change once the baby came. Hopefully I'll have fewer bruised ribs though.
"Go rest. I'll look into it." Jaggie shewed at me with her hands. Once I composed myself I had to agree with her, and nodded so.
"Ask Dravago to bring up anything you'd like me to look over," I asked her. She promised and I departed for the upstairs wing with my room and it's to-soft bed.
A tingling sensation crawled up my neck, the feeling when eyes are upon you. Nklos. His head tilted slightly in contemplative thought. Concentration broke when Smudge asked him a question I missed hearing. He turned his attention to her.
Jaggie was still staring at me though. Her was a complete and utter mask to what thoughts were going on inside. We both broke contact at the same time.
Maybe Dravago has a point, previous conversations rolling around inside my head. These prophesies had him worried. Maybe I should be worried too.
