TROUBLE BREWING IN COIN LORD WATERING HOLE

Phoenix Tavern – Primary Hangout of Notorious Fellowship Under Siege

Stormreach - The peace of the marketplace was shattered Zol evening as a high ranking officer of the organization known as the Fellowship of the Golden Night led a large posy of armed guards through the market and into the Phoenix Tavern. While no official explanation has been given by representatives of the Coin Lords or their notorious agents it has come to this news paper's attention that a kidnapping of the tavern's Warforged barkeep, Cog, was the instigating factor. Speculation has risen as to the reason for the kidnapping but an anonymous source familiar with the incident believes it was related to unsettled illegal gambling debts. The source has also indicated rumors of a network of paths that have been cut through Stormreach's intricate subterranean sewer system that potentially lead directly from the tavern to various places of importance including Lordsmarch Plaza, the House Phiarlan Chapter House, and even possibly the sealed off Subterranean.

While the rumors of paths leading to an underground Orc stronghold are unsubstantiated, Kobold tribes living in the sewer systems have confirmed that such paths potentially exist. Their shaman have marked off the routes as taboo zones due to kobolds who venture near them have been horrendously murdered by a series of intricate and deadly traps. Casual entry into Stormreach's sewer systems is always discouraged due to the fierce territoriality of many underground inhabitants but the potential of running across such deadly traps increases the risks of sewer workers even further. It is unclear why The Coin Lords and their agents feel they need secret paths under the city with which to traverse the city rather than walk out in the open like the rest of their citizens. One can only assume what plans or purposes they have with such secret tunnels or the danger they place upon any citizen unfortunate enough to come across such a route.

STOLEN GOODS RAID FNDS GREUSOME SCENE

City Watch Raiding a Suspected Sharn Syndicate Store House Uncover Massacre

Stormreach - This past Zol morning, acting upon a tip from an undercover agent, the Stormreach City Watch conducted a raid upon a warehouse in the southern dock district that was allegedly being used to house stolen merchandise acquired illegally by the Sharn Syndicate. What they found however was much worse than stolen valuables. Upon serving notice of inspection the armed guards broke into the warehouse to find a gruesome scene of over a dozen dead bodies.

Inspection of the bodies revealed they had been dead for two to three days. Clear signs of struggle lead investigators to suspect some sort of violence action was taken upon those running the warehouse. Any goods that had been stored in the warehouse appeared to have been destroyed. The motive and perpetrator of the attack is unknown however rival gang activity is highly suspected. City Watch officials at this time are unwilling to comment on the possibility of a new criminal organization operating in Stormreach or if the act was perpetrated by an already present organization. Traces of broken pieces of art that had been reported stolen were identified in the wreckage of destroyed crates and barrels. Their owners were notified of the losses. Those fortunate enough to have purchased insurance coverage of their belongings will be able to be compensated for their losses.

RUMORS ABOUND – CYRE REFUGEE INVASION IMMINENT?

Report: Coin Lords in Contact with Prince Oargev

Stormreach
– Reports from top sources within the Lordsmarch Palace indicate the Coin Lords have made contact with Prince Oargev formerly of Cyre. While no exact information has been confirmed it is apparent an underhanded deal has been struck between the Lords and the homeless prince. Reports now indicate a shipload full of refugees are in route to the city of Stormreach and for an undisclosed exchange of wealth they are to be given rights to the properties and land surrounding the city.

Local farmers are outraged by the prospect of squatters taking over their lands without compensation and the city could potentially see a food crisis as a poor harvest has already seen a sharp increase in commodities prices. With possibly hundreds of thousands of more mouths to feed and most of them likely occupying what little arable land that has been claimed from the jungles around town a potential famine could be imminent.

Even more worrisome is the potential of this arrangement to upset the uneasy truce formed with local orc tribes. Any brave farmer or rancher that works the lands around Stormreach can attest to the poor state of local tribes and their ever increasing desperate raids for food and supplies. While it is understandable that the refugees of Cyre need a place to call their own. The coin lords must be aware they may be sending these refugees into a potential war surrounded by hostile tribes. This compounded even further by also depleting the city's precarious food supplies. All for a few extra gold to line the greedy Coin Lords' coffers. Attempts to get any official statement from Lordsmarch Palace have been ignored but a copy of incoming shipping records indicates a boat full of Cyre refugees is expected to arrive very soon. If more are to follow experts believe the city could see food prices increase by 40% and housing costs nearly double for Stomreach's hard working citizens.

MISSING WARFORGED ELITE DECLARED DEATH IN ABSENTIA BY COURT

City's Wealthy and Influential Mourn Missing Friend

Stormreach
– Zircon, influential and wealthy Warforged investor was declared death in absentia by a Judge yesterday. The Warforged who owned a controlling stake in several shipping businesses and was well known for throwing lavish parties in the Goldstone Manor as well as his impressive private art collection had gone missing six months ago. The City Watch was unable to find the Warforged after a kidnapping investigation had been launched. As previously reported a ransom note requesting 200,000 platinum had been received by authorities but was never paid. No word has been received since and the Warforged has been assumed dead.

A Lordsmarch Court Judge considering the case agreed to declare Zircon dead despite no recovered body. While it is unusual for death in absentia to be declared before five years of absence, due to the nature of the kidnapping and the business needs of Zircon's holdings the judge decided to make the deceleration after only six months of absence. The decision was not without precedence as it had been done before in similar kidnapping cases. Community leader Talon Darsin, a close friend of Zircon, had been named as his sole benefactor per the Warforged's last will and testament.

Darsin, landlord of many low income apartment complexes, has released the following statement: “While this incident has rekindled the grief of my dear lost friend and reminds Stormreach of a lost son who proved any person could rise from poverty to the elite class. It is now time for us to move on and remember Zircon in solemn strength. Zircon always liked to look to the future for opportunity and prosperty and we too as a great city must strive forward together to create a great society for all."

In his friend's honor, Darsin has created the Zircon Memorial Fund designed to help other Warforged who have had troubles adjusting to post service life. The first annual Zircon Memorial Auction is to be held next Zor to raise money and will feature some of Zircon's favorite personal pieces. The private event will be held in the Bogwater Tavern. Any persons interested in the auction should contact Talon Darsin's office in the Tenements for an invitation.

RIOT IN HARBOR LEAVES 12 INJURED – 17 CYRE IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED

Racially Divided Brawl Believed Started By Shortage At Local Charity Kitchen

Stormreach
– A racially divided fight broke out outside the Venn Memorial Charity Kitchen in the lower docks district of the harbor last Far morning. City watch officials estimated nearly a hundred individuals were involved in a confrontation that escalated into a full riot that appeared to have started when the local charity kitchen ran out of food. It has been learned that the local kitchen that has been serving free meals to the needy for the past two years was unprepared for the increased influx of needy upon the arrival of 200 Cyre ex patriots this past week. At roughly 9:15 AM local time the kitchen's daily supply of soup and bread ran dry with several dozen locals and Cyre immigrants still unfed. Tempers began to flare as local citizens who have relied on the kitchen for their only meal of the day blamed the Cyre immigrants for the shortcomings.

Munderic d'Jorasco, proprietor of the charity kitchen attempted to placate the crowd with promises to provide more food. But the crowd had grown violent and fighting broke out. The riot caused great damage to the charity kitchen as well as several surrounding businesses. The city watch responded with several hundred armored officers to disperse the riot. 17 immigrants who resisted dispersal and assaulted city watch officers were arrested. An estimated 150,000pp worth of damage has been done to surrounding shops and the charity kitchen was completely destroyed. The Venn Memorial Charity Kitchen which already operated on a tight budget has no funds to replace the broken furniture and cooking equipment and will be unable to reopen in the foreseeable future. Munderic d'Jorasco has set up a donation fund with the Lordsmarch branch of the Bank of Kunderak. Any who wish to help with the rebuilding effort can deposit funds directly to the account labeled VMCK or speak to Munderic d'Jorasco personally if they wish to donate food, furniture, or cooking equipment.

EDITORIAL: COIN LORDS CONTINUE TO LIVE FAT WHILE WE FIGHT OVER SCRAPS

Food Prices Continue Rise, Harbor Riot Only the beginning.

As anybody who may have traveled through the lower harbor has seen, a riot has broken out amongst our citizens and its recently arrived migrants. This has left several businesses and the noble Venn Memorial Charity Kitchen in shambles. While I feel Stormreach should welcome with open arms any who wish to come to this great and free city, the dumping of poor unfortunate and unprepared souls on our shores has already reaped quite foreseeable rewards. It is unfortunate to say but riots such as what happened today will only happen again with larger numbers and with high frequency if more Cyre immigrants arrive in our beloved city.

Housing is already hard to come by in our cramped city, with many being forced to find refuge in the underground waterworks or attempt to brave the wilds of surrounding jungles. Food prices continue to rise with the price of a loaf of bread now costing 5sp more than it did just six weeks ago. Yet the coin lords and their well fed agents feel no effects of this increasing tension as they relax comfortably in their palaces and sip the cream that our hard work creates.

In my attempt to find out what the Coin Lords and their agents plan to do about this situation, if anything, I managed to speak with one of the Fellowship of the Golden Night's highest ranking officers, Lillypetal. As one would expect she was flanked by a heavily armed guard and only made the minimal of effort to answer my inquiries. Outside of mentioning a general idea of finding work for the immigrants she offered little solutions. Further, her ignorance on the price of food some of us struggle to afford was exemplified when she said, “I've yet to see these sky rocketing prices of goods you speak of. Considering the current number of persons to already come to this city, prices should remain fair.”

Prices so fair that us hard working people have had to resort to fighting amongst one another just to fill our bellies with cheap soup and bread once a day. It is clear that we should no longer look to the Coin Lords for any support on this issue and must solve this crisis on our own. My fellow Free Agents, we must shoulder this burden that has been imposed upon us, like it or not. We are all understandably threatened by these newest members to our city but the last thing we must do is allow ourselves to start fighting amongst each other while the city's lords live lives of luxury.

First and foremost, we must rebuild the Venn Memorial Charity Kitchen even better and grander than before. We must do this quickly as we cannot allow the least of us to go hungry on the streets. It has been long apparent that the Coin Lords do not wish to expend any of their wealth on such a problem and we are forced to solve this crisis on our own. We will gladly take these newly arrived Cyre immigrants into the ranks of the free agents and give the Coin Lords one less source of people to bully around.

INCREASED DEMAND TO BLAME FOR CITY'S ARMS AND ARMOR SHORTAGE

As Tensions and Crime Spread, More Citizens Looking To Arm Themselves

Stormreach – The usual wide selection of blades and armor usually found in Dragontooth Arms lies nearly empty. The once vast inventory maintained in the House Deneith enclave has been cleared out as Stormreach citizens rush to arm themselves.

People are worried,” Dragontooh Arms fletcher, Kaelar Ashenmor explained. “It's not safe to travel the streets unarmed, everyone wants at least a dagger or concealable mace and a chain shirt to hide under their clothes. If not wanting even more.” But the huge demand has overwhelmed the city's weapon and armor smiths as orders continue to poor in from worried citizens. “We were always kept pretty busy with just House Denieth's orders and only have a little spare time for private orders. But when Hammer and Chain in the harbor ran dry we saw more and more people come our way until our supply has nearly ran out.”

Metal supplies in the city have been stretched thin from this increased demand and the prices of blades have began to soar. Just two weeks ago the average citizen might have been able to afford a dagger for personal protection at the average cost of 2gp. But the price of the simple blade has recently increased five fold to nearly 10gp. Used weapons have also seen a great increase in demand as citizens look to secondhand merchants and pawn brokerages to fill the growing need.

The increase in armed citizens has local watch officials worried more than ever over safety issues. On behalf of the city watch, Coin Lord Yorrick Amanastu has issued the following warning, “if someone robs you, just surrender your coin to them and walk away. You lose a few coins but still have your life. Once you start pulling out steel instead of gold you're much more likely to get yourself hurt than protect a few bits of shiny metal.”

Lord Yorrick and the city watch have much to be concerned of as the number of violent crimes has increased dramatically. Citizens who have attempted to defend themselves have often been injured or killed for their troubles on numerous occasions in the past week with over a dozen homicides reported and many more believed to have gone unreported. City officials currently are advising citizens to avoid the harbor and marketplace during night time hours and keep their business within these areas to a bare minimum until the situation is once again under control.

CORRUPT MEMBER OF WATCH RECEIVES PROMOTION

Despite Repeated Calls for Corrupt Officer's Dismissal, Corporal Sephal Smith Promoted to Sergeant

Stormreach - As this fine news organization reported in the past, newly promoted Sergeant Sephal Smith is no stranger to enjoying the extra benefits of his job in the employ of the Coin Lords. The former Corporal was well known for his patrols in the harbor's warehouse district where he was paid quite handsomely not to look in certain buildings. Yet despite justified accusations and even well documented incidents of Smith's repeated acceptance of illicit benefits no disciplinary actions have been taken against him.

Instead it has been learned due to Smith's incredible crime reduction record in his patrol area he has been awarded with a promotion to the rank of sergeant. While it is clear to all citizens of the area that there is plenty of crime in Smith's patrols, shiny bits of metal seem to distract the supposed man of the law from seeing or reporting them. Now with Smith's new rank it will be even easier for him to be on the take as he is expected to oversee patrols in half the harbor. There is little doubt his patrols will find very little crime as they are paid to divert their eyes while the rest of our citizens are forced to defend ourselves from the growing bravado of the Lightfoot, Sharn, and Bilge Rat thugs.

While the Coin Lords have sent in their steel puppets in a haphazard attempt to clean up the mess that is the harbor, local citizenry have had to rely on themselves for protection. I have learned several citizens have taken to organizing their own armed safety patrols, an act I whole heartedly applaud and wish the utmost success to. It is clear to all the city's watch is providing services to the highest bidder and unfortunately the highest bid is far too great for the hard working citizens of Stormreach to afford. Perhaps it is time we put these fools out of work and enforce the city's laws on our own without relying on the incompetent, corrupt, ham handed attempts of the so called City Watch.

STOMREACH MUST RELY ON ITSELF, NOT NOBLE 'SALVATION'

For the last few weeks, Ranard Mosev has certainly done a few things right. While the coinlords have conveniently locked themselves up in their palace and sent their agents out in feeble attempts to control the chaos that is the harbor Mosev has been one of the few to get their hands dirty and actually do some good. While it is certainly commendable of Mosev as well as the others who have done what they can during this time we must be cautious not to turn our trust and dependence upon so called noble born peoples during our times of need.

Stormreach has always been a free city that while tolerated the coin lords still allowed the average citizen the freedom to work their own ways up the ranks. Yet at dire times of needs we seem unable to resist turning to those we have deemed nobility to provide for us. I feel sometimes I am the only one concerned about such a reliance and am worried about the motivations of this minor nobleman to stick his nose into this fight.

I am not a big believer in noble causes and while I respect citizens who do what they can to help this great city I cannot help but wonder if Mosev and others have ulterior motives for their intervention. Mosev certainly bided his time before entering the fray and I cannot help but wonder what he stands to gain for paling out a few buckets of water from a burst dam. Mosev like his kin cared very little for others that did not attend the opulent galas and balls of Stormreach's elite a few weeks ago. In fact, unless you as well attended such events you would be forgiven for not knowing who he was as he kept a low profile with his family's wealth and did little to involve himself with the hard working citizens of Stormreach.

While rags like The Chronicle are quite eager to lap up the small offerings Mosev are willing to offer and many people are so desperate for a leader they will follow just about anybody I plead for caution. Any help is of course great as we all worry about our family, friends, and property during this horrible crime wave. But we should not be ready to replace a group of tyrants with a new one just because he can eloquently wave a sword around at a couple ruffians.

FIRE RAGES UNCHECKED IN WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

AT LEAST FOUR FOUND DEAD - ARSON SUSPECTED

Stormreach – Fire raged unchecked for several hours in the warehouse district of the harbor late Zol Evening. The fire would have normally been easily put out by the Stormreach's volunteer fire fighters however due to fears of violence and crime in the area they were not allowed on the scene until the city watch could secure the area.

Because of this delay the fire consumed the residence of Sirius Ingres and heavily damaged adjacent warehouses before the the fire fighters were able to dispel the blaze. The bodies of four individuals, including one believed to be Sirius Ingres were found in the remains of the residence. Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the fire and investigators currently believe the fire may have been started intentionally.

Preliminary investigations have spotted the chemical signatures of alchemist's fire at the center of the blaze on the second floor of Ingres's estate. Locals however have been unwilling to assist investigators and the presence of the city watch in the area has caused push back from local residents. Due to the current state of the harbor area it is believed a proper investigation will not be able to be performed and a source within the city watch that wishes to remain anonymous believes no results are likely to come from the case.

Along with Sirius Ingres, the unidentified remains of a halfling and two other humans were found in the remains of the fire. Investigations are currently pending regarding the identities of these individuals.

DEATH LIST – THE LATEST DEPTHS THE CITY'S LOW LIFES SINK TO

BUSINESSMEN, GUILDS, HOUSES, WATCH, NONE SAFE FROM ASSASINATION LIST

The city's crime rate continues to skyrocket to an all time high as we all worry if we will manage to make it through the day without being robbed, or worse, as we all try to go about our daily lives. The Coin Lords continue to be ineffective in their attempt to stop this problem and local citizens have turned to their neighbors and friends for protection and perhaps putting a stop to this never ending cycle of crime and terror.

Yet as we felt perhaps we neared the peak of this terrible crime wave another leaf is turned to reveal just how far the underworld can sink to bring our fair city down. A source maintaining strict anonymity for the sake of their safety and those of their friends have given to me at great risk of both theirs and my personal safety a list. The list might be considered a who's who of Stormreach citizens, including businessmen, guild leaders, watchmen, even members of the great houses.

This is not a list for those invited to the next fancy opulent Coin Lord banquet but instead a grocery list for assassination. My source informed me this list is posted in a well frequented place that the backstabbers of Stormreach know and use often to make a few coins at the cost of slaying their fellow sentient beings. It sickens and saddens me that life could so easily be bought and sold and worse by publishing this list I will undoubtedly earn myself and possibly even my editor's name on such lists. Many members of this list have already died of mysterious circumstances during this crime wave, most recently being that of Sirius Ingres in a terrible arson attack. If you are someone you know is on this list, I can only hope you will do all you can to assure your safety and take all precautions possible even possibly leaving the city until this crime spree finally subsides.

*A long list is written out containing almost four dozen names including all the officers of the Fellowship, several members of the dragonmarked houses, high ranking members of the city watch, and several 'business people' that are known associates of Sharn Syndicate and Quickfoot gangs*
