As I mentioned in the last post, my boss had two big orders to fill, and had a medical emergency, so I got asked to come in.

I was asked to make 60 cupcakes, three flavors. They had to be Michigan bird themed.

The state bird is the robin.

But I think of red-winged blackbirds,

and great blue herons, because of all the kayaking I do.

And, I needed to make a dozen more plain, chocolate and vanilla, cupcakes, and 15 sunshine cookies. These are stupid cute.

Oh, and I didn't make these then, I made these on Labor day weekend, but I figure some of you will get a kick out of them-- Unicorn Poop!!

My boss was super sweet about it all, and loved the cupcakes. I'm kinda proud of them, so I had to show off a little. I really haven't done much with fondant (which the robins and blackbirds are made of) before, because I think it's cheating when you cover a cake in it, and it tastes nasty (like stale marshmallows). It is really fun to work with though. Like grown up play-doh. I colored and shaped it all. My first time hand drawing with buttercream too.

I had a blast. I was out until 6am, but I still had fun. I love my job.

Tomorrow, 175 heart shaped sugar cookies that will be decorated to look like the neckline of a wedding gown to go in gift bags at some fancy schmancy wedding expo thingie.

If you don't like fondant, use marzipan.  It is more expensive, but so tasty.
