I am a roleplayer on Thelanis. I have been a part of the roleplaying community on Thelanis for over two years. I count several members of each of the r/p guilds as friends. I am here today as a fellow roleplayer.

I feel it's time to address an issue that has cropped up several times in recent days in regards to roleplay in general, and roleplay as it pertains to Dungeons and Dragons Online. The topic on today's agenda is: intimacy. Where is it appropriate, and how do we approach the matter without violating Turbine's TOS or the sensibilities of others?, to be more specific. Now first of all, before you convince yourself that I'm here to be all preachy, and judgemental and try to push my own code of ethics on you, try to suspend your disbelief and understand this: I don't really care what you do in the privacy of your own chat box. It's none of my business who you're 'doing' or when you get 'busy'. What I consider to be my business is when that "getting-busy-doing" impacts the community that we roleplay in- and I'm here to tell you, there's been some impact. Some people that are not members of our community have approached me about it, and I wish to express my concerns here. Once is an accident, twice may be coincidence, but three or more times is a trend.

Some of what I've learned over the years I've been roleplaying has been trial and error. I've made blunders, both huge and small, so I'm coming to you as someone that's been there, done that. Some of what I've learned has also come from the wrong turns of other players, as well.

There's always been a certain amount of affection that's been readily visible between some of our members, but it seems to have escalated recently to include more and more risque actions. Following are some things that we all need to be aware of that could be seriously damaging to a positive roleplaying environment:
-Characters embracing in a sexual manner.
-Explicit descriptions of two people kissing- and not just a peck on the lips. "Explicit" in this case means going into graphic detail.
-"Necking" or "Making out" which can include exploring each other's bodies- whether it be roaming hands or mouths.
-Profane or overly suggestive comments
-Incestuous overtones between player characters that are "related"
-Roleplaying minors involved in adult situations.
-Soliciting favors from others of a sexual nature.

Some things we can do as roleplayers to reduce the chance of violating Turbine's Terms of Service and the rights of other people:
-If it's harder than PG-13, don't do it in DDO- take it to an outside venue, such as messenger, or a chat room. Aside from the fact that it's against the TOS, EVERYTHING we do in DDO can be looked at by someone else. Turbine employees have to be able to look over records, to ascertain the nature of the infraction reported, so they can see every single word you type, whether it's in Guild chat, Party chat, private /tells, or chat channels.

Here's an exerpt taken directly from Turbine's web page: -"You will not access or use the Turbine Service to publish, post, upload, transmit, distribute, disseminate or spotlight Content that is harmful, abusive, threatening, vulgar, sexually explicit, defamatory, libelous, obscene, infringing, embarrassing, unwanted, invasive of another’s right of privacy or publicity, hateful or racially, or ethnically offensive (such as ethnic slurs and religious epithets) or, in a reasonable person’s view, otherwise offensive or objectionable (such as offensive or objectionable character names, guild names, pet names, in-game labels, titles, descriptions, or inscriptions)."

- Know who you're roleplaying with. If you don't ask, you may find out after the fact that the innocent, young, flirty little elf that you were snogging last night in the Phoenix is in actuality a rough-voiced, 45 year-old man with two kids and a mortgage. Communication is important.
- Use a little common sense. If it's something your straight-laced Great-Auntie Agatha would stroke out over, maybe you should think twice before trying it out.
- Pay attention when someone complains. All it takes is one person hitting that report button for everything done in-game to get put under close scrutiny, and the Ten-Ton-Ban-Hammer often falleth thereafter.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you're going for shock value in your posts that others can readily see, you may be the one to get the shock, instead, when you get reported.
-If you feel uncomfortable, in any way/shape/form, stop what you're doing, and ask for help or advice from a veteran roleplayer that you trust.

I am not pointing any fingers, here. What I am trying to do is minimize possible damage before it strikes our cozy little community. Please feel free to contact me if you have concerns or questions that you wish to talk about.

Turbine TOS http://www.turbine.com/news/56

-"You will not exhibit or partake in any behavior that degrades service performance or is disruptive to the playability of the Games or the normal functionality of the Turbine Service, causes grief, aggravation or alarm to other users, or otherwise restricts or inhibits any other user from using and enjoying the Turbine Service (for example, deliberately using bugs or loopholes, dropping excessive items or summoning excessive portals to disrupt a Game or disrupting the flow of chat in chat rooms with vulgar or abusive language, hitting the return key repeatedly, inputting excessively large images so the screen goes by too fast to read, flooding (continuous posting repetitive text), “spamming,” or excessive SHOUTING (all caps) in an attempt to disturb other users).

-Although some Games may be role-playing games, you may not claim “role-playing” in defense of any violation of the Code of Conduct.  A player who violates the Code of Conduct may be warned by Turbine staff, but some particularly serious violations or repeated violations can result in other sanctions, such as a lockout or permanent ban, without warning.  In addition, Turbine reserves the right to delete characters or entire accounts as we see fit, without warning, for certain violations. Turbine may log and review in-game chat at any time to assist in making decisions regarding violations of the Code of Conduct.  This includes, but is not limited to, private chat, fellowship chat and allegiance chat.

Note: Turbine has final say over what constitutes a violation of this Code of Conduct.  Turbine reserves the right to change the Code of Conduct at any time.  It is your responsibility to check periodically for updated to the Code of Conduct."

Part of me wants to just let this subject die, ignore the subject.  That being said... yeah.  Don't do anything graphic in open chat.  Basic rule.  Try to bring it to AIM or what ever.  I agree!

That being said.  Some people really need to back off.  If one of my characters is making out and RPing with someone and makes out with your mister man who has the kids and the mortgage.  Oh no.  It is role play.  I know what I am doing, so did they.

Same thing where if someone is not of age..... you know what.  If you have talked about it, and they don't care, and you don't care.  Leave it be.  Not your buissness.  They have discussed it.  They are cool with it.    Leave it be.  If they slip up and emote in general too many times report them.  Don't go dragging someones personal information, like age, into public knowledge, using it against them is also a no no by the ToS.

After all.... this is a mature rated game with moaning sucubi in the market place.

The nature of the post seems to be information only.  I read the post and I didn't see any finger pointing.  It's good to know what the rules are and what options there are.  People are going to do what they are going do.  I am sure there are thousands of opinions on this subject.

I think this post was made as a reminder to us all of a general issue facing us now, rather than a specific issue around one or two person.  In fact, I believe that great pains were made about addressing the specifics.

I ask all Fellowship Officers to please go and read the Officer's Forum thread 'Potential Problems' in its entirety before posting further.

Thank you Avuna for quoting the Code.  A general reminder with all of the new folks is a good thing.

As for the specific issue mentioned above, I have personally spoken with those involved and if you have further complaints, I ask you to bring them to me.  Too many helpful hands are irritating each other.

We all have the best intentions.  I understand and ask for your trust in the handling of these sensitive issues.  I am not perfect, but as I have been directly in contact with the participants I believe that I have a little bit more information to deal with this.

Please let me do so.

Thank you.

As I am only able to view this on Crimson Nexus forums, I also ask that you visit our site and post the same message. It is my understanding that one of my valued members was involved in this. The issue has been spoken of and I can simply ask that you inform myself as well if you get any more complaints of this matter that involves any of my members.
These things are exactly why I do my best to not get involved in character relationships in MMOs. It leads to too many problems and people are offended easily but I do not blame them. Their character's intimate actions should not be publicly displayed.

Cyren,
The nature of my post was not an accusation, nor was it intended to single out any individual.
I have duplicated this message over on your guildportal site, as requested.
