Becoming Adept!

I am trying to allow my members to download certain files from my File Manager from a link in a forum post, specifically, my Mids' Hero Designer save files for City of Heroes/Villains.  When the link is clicked, however, instead of a download prompt, it comes up as a webpage that cannot be found.  How do I make this file available to my members to download?  I am not familiar with webpage design or building and would greatly appreciate your help.  Thank you in advance

Tell them to Right Click, Save.

Also, when I try to View it in File Manager, it opens a new window with "The page can not be found" instead of a download prompt.

Hmmmm, all my files in File Manager come from www.axiomfiles.com and not my guild name. Is that different for those sites that purchased a GP Domain?

The error sounds like the link is incorrect. Can you copy and paste a link in your browser to a file in your File Manager like a gif or jpg to see if it opens properly? If even that comes up with an error, then maybe there is a problem with your guild's File Manager and you should fill out a Support Form (link at top and bottom of page).

If it does show up, and the link to your MXD file is correctly pasted on your forum, check it in HTML mode ( at the bottom) and make sure the editor isn't changing its syntax. I had that happen once to me, although it hasn't occured since.

Or if all else fails, have you tried reuploading the file?

No, all mine are from www.axiomfiles.com, as well, but the link was posted in thefiendarmy.guildportal.com, if that makes a difference.

I saved an online .gif to my comp then uploaded with no problems.  However, if I entered the URL into the prompt then clicked Upload File, IE froze until I clicked Close, then it said Not Responding and prompted if I should send an error report, 5 times.

If it does show up, and the link to your MXD file is correctly pasted on your forum, check it in HTML mode ( at the bottom) and make sure the editor isn't changing its syntax. I had that happen once to me, although it hasn't occured since.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that or where those arows are.

Or if all else fails, have you tried reuploading the file?

Yes, before I wrote my first post.

I'm sorry if I wasn't more clear about what's going on, and will try to clear it up.  I have a save file for a program on my computer.  I uploaded the save file into my File Manager at www.axiomfiles.com.  I would like the file available for download, but instead it tries to open it as a webpage that cannot be opened since there is no viewable content.  IDK if I made this clear of if you already figured this out from what I stated before, but I do appreciate your time and effort.  If you still think checking in HTML would help, please instruct me on how to do this.  Thank you again.

I think there was a misunderstanding (my bad). When I asked:
Can you copy and paste a link in your browser to a file in your File Manager like a gif or jpg to see if it opens properly?
I meant, to copy the link from File Manager (like a gif or jpg) and paste it in your browser to see if the image displays properly. My grammar wasn't the best, now that I reread that.

When you Edit your post, at the bottom-left of the editor window you will see three buttons:

 - Design Mode
 - HTML mode
 - Preview

When you click , it will change the interface to show the HTML code. Go to where your link is:

<a href="your link address">Link name</a>

Check the area in red to be sure the editor did not alter it. If it did, paste the link within those quotes and click Save.

Go to your post and Right Click the link and click Save. If it works, your file name should show up in the File Name box.

OK, all the other files are .guf and .jpg and can be viewed when the URL is pasted into the URL Box in IE.

I (again) reloaded the Mids' file and checked the href in the forum post in HTML mode: it is the same URL as in my File Manager.  When I right-click it, the only Save option I have is Save Target As...  When I click that, a download prompt appears but is making no progress and a prompt pops up in front of it stating,

"Internet Explorer cannot download playerslayer.mxd from www.axiomfiles.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this site.  The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.  Please try again later."

I know that before it said cannot download from thefiendarmy.guildportal.com, but this time it said www.axiomfiles.com.

I just did a test. I made a text file and renamed the extension to MXD and uploaded it to File Manager. I right clicked, Save (Target As) and I get the same thing you did.

I renamed the extension to MX and the same thing.

I then renamed it to JPG and it worked.

Going another step, I renamed it back to MXD and uploaded it to another sever and I was able to Right Click, Save from there without any trouble.

It appears axiomfiles has some kind of filter in place to doesn't allow certain extensions to be downloaded, most likely a security measure? It could also be a glitch, so you may want to put in a Support Form (link at top and bottom of this page) and see what they say.

One thing I did find is that it will allow ZIP or RAR files to be downloaded if you wanted to compress it first and go that route. Or just change the file extension to something it likes and instruct your guildies to modify it after downloading.

Alright, I was unable to do the .gif thing b/c the data got corrupted in the file somewhere in the conversions, but .ZIP works great!  Thanks for all your help and support!  You are definitely putting your time and effort into making GP a better community for us admin and our members!
