Mail Notification v6
by Mottie
Description
This mod opens a popup to notify you if you have a new mail message. It was written for users who wish to hide their top menu bar (state bar/log in bar). Or if you just want a bigger message telling you that you have mail. I've set it up to open either a growl window (timed popup) or a facebox (popup you have to close).
For more information on the custom variables, please see
this post
.
To style the growl window (pictured above), use the "Growl Window Styling" Mod or refer to
this post
.
To style the Facebox popup window, please refer to

Description
This mod will add CSS classes to the character status, so you can set the color yourself with the CSS and the script will do the rest. Within the script, you can set it to just color the Status column or the entire row. This is what it will look like:

There are several requests that have been made, both by me and by others, in several threads. I'm compiling them here and would like to get some feedback from Aaron on whether or not these are doable and an estimated time on when they might be able to be implemented.
1. Mailing Groups
2. Joined Column
3. Renaming Logins
4. Image Categories & Columns
5. Last logged in
Mailing Groups:
While Guildportal has some awesome features for guilds, the email system is one of the weakest. The addition of a spell checker, for instance, would help improve it. More importantly, the ability to create mailing groups or at least mail by access level has been requested several times. I frequently need to mail all my officers or all new members (associate access), yet am unable to do so without selecting every name and possibly missing someone.
”Joined” Column
We need a “Joined” column on the control panel members chart. Yes, I can select an individual member and see when they joined but doing this for several members is tedious. A column showing when they joined that I can sort by would be invaluable. We put new members through a one month trial, so I regularly need to see who joined and when.
Renaming Logins
Several members have asked if they could change the name they use to login. Since this name appears on every post and email, it can be confusing. Many of my guild members do not have login names which match their character, so you have to lookup the login to see who it is. After they join, they often want to change the login to something more appropriate without having to create another account.
Image Categroes and Columns
Currently, we can edit image links on the images content box but we cannot edit the categories. We can only add or delete them. If I wish to rename a category, there is no option to do so. Also, we have many images on our list so they scroll off the bottom of the page. I understand that Guildportal doesn't host images, so we can't have thumbnails but the page appearance would at least look better by having the image links in two columns similar to the categorized links content. And no, I can't move all the links to that type of content because, again, we have a lot of them.
Last Logged In
Right now, only site admins can use the control panel to see when members last logged in. We require members to log in weekly and my officers need to be able to sort members by when they last logged in without having access to the control panel. Can this please be added somewhere on the roster, say a new page perhaps? That would enable my officers to assist in tracking down “delinquent” members.
Aaron, please let me know if any of the above are doable and if so, when you can get to them. Thanks.

Image category editing will go live with the next code push, tonight.
I agree with you that the e-mail system is one of the “weakest” components of the system. On the one hand, something has to be, but on the other, it'll get an update eventually.
At this time, I'm doing refactoring and bug hunting in the code base and cannot provide any kind of ETA for features.
About the spell checker specifically, the last time I looked there were none available that met the following criteria:
- Cross browser.
- Highly performant.
- Less than ludicrous licensing fees.
If there's a product that you, or that anyone, knows about that meets the above criteria, I'd be happy to take a look. Me writing it from the ground up isn't an option, btw.

Aaron, I see that you added the Joined column and changed image categories so they can now be edited. Thank you! I appreciate the hard work you put in.
Can you address the other items? I know you said a spell checker is out, at least until we can find something meeting your criteria. Is it possible (ie. relatively easy) to change the Images content code to display two columns, to ad mailing groups and to allow changing login names?

A few more things I'd appreciate feedback on Aaron.
Small Events Box Names
Currently, the small events box displays the name of the event and my name, the person who typed in the event. Can we get a box on the calendar editor that would allow us to enter the name of the event host and have display in the small events box rather than the name of the person who typed in the event?
Calendar Editor
Instead of the tiny description box on the calendar editor, could you change itto match the WYSIWIG editors you have for email, news items, etc.?
Award Notes
When a medal is awarded, would it be possible to have an optional “notes” field. In the field, you would enter the specific reason for the individual receiving the award. That text would then show up as an addendum to te name of the award that appears as a popup when you hover your cursor over the award. Right now, the hover text might say “Medal of Honor”. With the added notes it might say “Medal of Honor: Bob received this medal for aiding his team during the raid on 10-12-2003”.
Thanks.

Again, can't provide any ETA on those. All of it's possible, but I can't say when (or if) it'll happen. I've already managed to over-commit us on promised feature additions, and far too many of them require core architectural changes. Mail groups would be one of those things.

I'll more specifically address changing login names. Right now (as it always has been), people can submit support tickets to get their login name changed for free. Anything beyond that, especially self-management of login names, would be abused (post flame, change name, post another flame, change name) to the point where it'd generate even more abuse complaints, and those can individually take hours to resolve (contacting ISPs, banning IP addresses, etc.).
So, I'm opposed to it.

Small events box names. If we add a text box where you enter the name of the person running the event, we de-couple the event from any actual profile in the system, meaning there's no click-to-mail for the person running it. If a person is going to be running events for the guild, shouldn't they have events admin access?
Events editor. After your call the other day, I did increase the size of the text box by moving things around a bit, but didn't switch it out with the WYSIWYG editor. Because of the design of the editors, there isn't a lot of play room in there. This is something that can be changed, but it's a bigger deal than dragging and dropping a component. No ETA.
Medal notes... Lemme look at that.

Fingers of Fury!
If a person is going to be running events for the guild, shouldn't they have events admin access?
Well look at it this way some guilds, like Torva Spiritus, encourage all of our guildies to run events. Giving every guildie administrative access to an item is something I'm not really open too. I would rather them coordinate it and have a huntmaster/officer add it to the calendar. This also gives less people to fight with to make sure things are being keyed in a semi-consistent format. Giving everyone the ability to do this is.... well just say the thought is ugly....

Hmmm... How about event submissions, like news submissions? Approved by an administrator, but all of the original details would be provided by the submitter?
