Mail Notification v6
by Mottie
Description
This mod opens a popup to notify you if you have a new mail message. It was written for users who wish to hide their top menu bar (state bar/log in bar). Or if you just want a bigger message telling you that you have mail. I've set it up to open either a growl window (timed popup) or a facebox (popup you have to close).
For more information on the custom variables, please see
this post
.
To style the growl window (pictured above), use the "Growl Window Styling" Mod or refer to
this post
.
To style the Facebox popup window, please refer to

@Val: I really need to think about this. Customizability is coming. More importantly, so are other features, like providing easy access to change profile settings, a count/listing of those currently logged on to any associated voice server, or opening the control panel to specific sections instead of requiring the whole CP be loaded and then drilling down.
Giving the admin the ability to completely control the ability for their members to benefit from enhancements like those would be... Meh. Anyway, let me think about it.

Fingers of Fury!
Val is right on. It is offensive to change the rules and have someone else decide what content will be displayed on a paid site.
I will be very interested to see if it is going to stay this way for very much longer.

Alright, the ability to switch it off entirely, site-wide, will be the first option when customization comes in.
Until then, you can go into Control Panel > Custom HTML & Script > Custom CSS > CSS Additions to Standard, and add the following line (make sure to tick the "Enabled?" checkbox before saving:
#guildGloBar {
display
:
none
!important
; }

I disagree with the need for admin to hide the bar from everyone - some people want it and get added functionality out of it. I have nothing against it being put in, but won't be using it...what's the point putting together a guild site and then taking away optional content that won't hurt anyone and potentially make a user's experience better? So what if I pay for the site, I don't manage it for myself, I manage it for my guildmembers.

Yeah... And there's a good reason for putting it in. depending on your layout, that box of links (Profile, Logout, Control Panel, Member Admin, Mail, Blog, Chat, Page: Preview | Edit, Support, etc.) under the tabs (or wherever you opt to put it) is getting awfully crowded. Adding more site-wide functionality to it isn't really possible at this point, because nearly everybody's site would have to start wrapping everything around to a new line, and then it really gets ugly.
The Global Guild Bar will eventually have a single icon for the Control Panel, and when you hover over it, you'll see a menu with categorized sub-menus containing links that open specific parts of the Control Panel, taking out the need for you to open up the entire Control Panel to hunt down the area you're looking for.
Also, if you have things that require attention (like pending applications), you'll see a friendly alert on the bar, letting you know about it.
Profile settings work much the same way as the Control Panel, and like it, they could be added to the Global Guild Bar with a menu, making it easy for your members to add characters, change their signature, etc. without having to open the profile window to hunt stuff down. It could also show a little alert for certain things -- like if they haven't entered any characters yet, or if there's a crafting request they might be able to fulfill.
These are things that couldn't possibly be added using the previous structure (the box of links under the tabs).
I feel I need to make something clear here, since I want to avoid setting up a dangerous precedence by adding the option to disable it for everyone, site-wide... It's inevitable that, in the future, there will be features added that not everyone will like. The benefits of the feature to the end-user, the admins, and the system itself will all be considered when I am deciding whether to provide the option to switch it off. Occasionally,
I might not provide that option
.
I've honestly never seen such a backlash (though it really boils down to a few users out of hundreds of thousands over this particular feature) over something being added that's relatively innocuous, and if not immediately providing essential features, has the potential to with further development. Some of the comments here have been downright insulting. Does anyone actually believe I added that feature
JUST
to yank control out of the hands of the admin in some kind of power play to prove that I'm king around here? Seriously?
I have to be honest -- sometimes it can wear on a guy. Especially when the most vocal and harsh critics are the same ones that are asking for dozens of features for themselves that very few people other than them will ever use. Now, I have no problem adding those kinds of features, but if they're from the same people that slam me when I try to bring the experience members have on their sites a little closer to what you get on the big-name social networking sites... Remember, just because you don't like chat or knowing who's online without having to find a page with the "Who's Online" widget on it, doesn't mean the members of your guild wouldn't like it, and as the person who develops the software both for the guild leader
AND
the guild member, I will sometimes do things you don't like but that your members might like very much.
Meh, enough with my rant.
Anyway, the ability to disable it for everyone on your site is coming with the next release, along with the ability to have it fade out when the mouse isn't over it, and a bunch of customization options. There very likely will be new features and functionality developed in the future that will only be available to those with the bar enabled.

The updates are always appreciated by our members. I have no doubt once given a little time the bar will be considered an asset. Big thanks on the Firefox fix!

Aaron, my intent was not to make you angry, and it's apparent that I've upset you. I simply find the bar ugly. I'm not sure what you call these "floaty bottom bars" but I've seen them on other sites and have always hated them. Nine times in ten, they do not match the host site at all and I personally find them jarring.
Appearance aside, there is the bigger issue of who is the consumer here. My members aren't the ones paying Guildprtal year after year, I am. I'm not sure where most of the money comes from, so I accept that the majority may well come from advertising, not the fees we admins pay. That being said, I'm the one who foots the bills for my kinship (guild) and the one who spends hundreds of hours maintaining and improving my site. I have high standards and I believe I should be the one to determine what happens on my site.
I'm not "yanking this feature" away from everyone. If my members choose to visit other GuildPortal sites, such as this one, or some other guild they are a member of, they have free access to the floaty bar. I am only limiting it on
my
site. You mention problems with displaying menus on various sites. That isn't the case on my site and I work hard to keep it that way.
As I mentioned previously, I've run into problems with Guildportal because of the murky gray area between the rights of Guildportal members vs. the control by admins over what happens on our sites.
Anyway, I apologize for ruffling your feathers. I
should
have chosen to be less dramatic in making my point by using red letters and will try to be more tactful in future posts. I'm old enough to know better and am sorry.
As for regularly asking for improvements and changes, I thought that was a good thing.
I believe that I far more Guildportal features than most admins, so I run into the quirks and problems more often. I thought I was doing some good by trying to get them fixed and your responsiveness in the past is what made Guildportal stand out above the other hosting sites.
I am honestly saddened that this is grating on you. That also was not my intent but it now puts me in the awkward position of living with problems and remaining quiet or going elsewhere. Neither of those makes me happy.
