Due to the many requests for this feature, GuildPortal now supports sub-forums! For those who aren't familiar with it, sub-forums allow you to select a parent forum when editing the properties of a forum. From the main forum listing in your forums widget, sub-forums are listed just below the description of their parent forum. For example, if your guild plays a game that has archetypes and then specific classes underneath archetypes, you might want to have a setup like this:

Class Discussion (Forum Category)
    Fighters (Parent Forum)
        Monks (Sub-forum)
        Brawlers (Sub-forum)
    Scouts (Parent Forum)
        Assassins (Sub-forum)
        Rangers (Sub-forum)

Used in concert with forum categories, you now have a much cleaner way to display many forums.

In order to start using this feature (going live at 1:30 PM EST January 4th), click Edit at the bottom of your forums widget, then click the Edit link under any of the listed forums. As long as the forum you're editing is not already a parent of other forums, you will see the drop-down list of other forums that the one you're editing may be a child of.

Sweet! Will it break links if I move topics into the sub forums?

Hi Aaron!

So far one complaint... when I make a new forum, I set the Category and Parent Forum then Save. The new forum is added to the category group but not to the parent forum. I need to Edit it and set the parent after the forum is made before it becomes a sub forum.

Oh, and not a complaint, but the sub forum list that appears when I open the parent forum needs the normal and alternate row classes added. Also the Next Unread icon doesn't seem to work properly when there are no posts - see this page (temporarily empty until I start moving stuff)

Other than that, so far everything is looking good!

I think that last code push was for these changes.  So it should be fixed now, let us know if anything else is not working as it should!

Becoming Adept!

Before I start of with the post, let it be known that I used the search function on the website and don't like reviving dead topics. None of the other posts and topics are close enough related to my question so I will ask them here.

Today due to a mistake from my Guild leader the forums where all messed up, some went missing and a lot of new forums where added. The missing ones where brought back to us thanks to the Guildportal admins, thank you for that. After that I went tp clean up the mess my GL made by making subforums of the new forums. This so that everything went where it should go inthe future, or at least so I thought. Now I noticed a small problem with the current way of viewing and adding or editing sub-forums.

Once a Sub-forum is added to a parent forum, they are removed from the forums lists. Normally this would not be a problem to me, since I can still see what is in them and moderate as I like. The problem I do have is as follows though: After a conversation with my GL and a couple of officers we decided that these sub-forums where no longer required. This would not be a problem, where it that I could access them in an editing tool that is part of the website and delete them on sight. Currently, I cannot find let alone access such tool. This makes deleting the sub-forums a bit difficult.

Now I could just send a ticket and ask for deletion of the forums, but I would rather be able to do it myself instead of spending the time of other people on this matter ( can't learn a lot if other people are doing all the work for me now can I? ). Since I got trouble finding a way of deleting them... I will have to ask for some one to assist me in the matter, and possibly help me find a way to delete the sub-forums.

Also while I was making the forums into sub-forums, I noticed that I was able to add the forums that where going to be sub-forums to a forum that was already deleted. This does strike me as not logical. It looks a lot like putting an apple inside a prume while that prume is already eaten by someone who left the room already. I accedentally linked a couple of the forums to that parent forum, but since the parent forum is gone, the sub-forums linked to that are not visible, and thus not delete-able.

So a long story short:

Is it possible to see sub-forums in the forum editing tool, and if not, how can I delete the forums? They are locking up space in my limited ammount of forums which is bad for my website as well as the dataserver this forum is stored on.

Looking forward to a constructive rather then hasty answer,

Gvd.
