In case anyone was struggling to fill out their level 80 equipment slots with exotics, I've done a bit of browsing around on how the Mystic Forge works. As a general rule, if you chuck any 4 76+ rares of any one type of weapon, you'll get an exotic version of that weapon.

But, for skill points, mystic coins and some materials, you can also get them. This guide explains it pretty succinctly:

In my experience it gives you a chance of an exotic and a very extremely rare chance of a legendary precursor. With my luck it has always just given me a rare and never an exotic So be careful before you start putting anything in the forge you cannot afford to lose. It is a gamble, unless you use one of the many recipes, such as the mystic weapons you mentioned, or my favorite Mystic salvage kit. Your link is very helpful for finding safe combinations to put in the forge, been looking around different places, found the same info, but spread out. Nice to have a more complete list.

It's the questions we can't answer that teach us the most. They teach us how to think. If you give a man an answer, all he gains is a little fact. But give him a question and he'll look for his own answers.”
