Heya Mottie,
your site is always helpful, but I couldn't see anything which helps my newest query! I wonder if there is a sensible way to be able to list a table of information somewhere on my site. Currently we have a forum post which lists each member and shows their main and alts, with their respective class and specs. This is really useful for keeping track of available classes, but it's becoming a pain to keep tidy and updated.
Currently we ask the members to copy and paste the format and then update their chars but this doesn't always end with a great result, if they follow the format at all.
I've tried making a table, which is much nicer to look at and easier to keep a strict format, but isn't great for quickly updating by copy/paste (so far as I can tell). What would be great is if there was some way for either the members to update themselves, or a way that I can pick up the information from a post and paste it as a batch. Is there any way that you can think of that I could accomplish this?
Thanks,
Ava

Hi Avvie!

Hmmm, I can think of a couple of alternative solutions for you:
  1. Set up a Zoho or Google Spreadsheet with all the data you have now. Then give access rights to members.

Advantages: Users can download, print, modify and with admin access, edit it online. You can always keep a backup copy to restore the spreadsheet if someone purposefully messes up the data.  You can embed this spreadsheet on your site for all to view.

Disadvantage: No way to style the spreadsheet... it'll always be bright white.

  2. Set up a Wufoo form and have members add their characters to the database.

Advantages: Members submit their data in a form and the results display in a nice clean table format and you can actually style yourself as well as embed on your site.

Disadvantage: The only disadvantage I can think of about this would be for a free account you are only allowed one admin who can edit or modify the information. I think the site does track IP addresses so giving the admin password to other people may raise a flag on their side.
If I think of any more methods I'll post them here

Hi Mottie,
thanks first for such a swift & helpful reply.
I had toyed with Google spreadsheets, but we then ran into the problem of people being able to view. As I recall (and please correct me if wrong) you need to have a google account to be able to see the information regardless of me setting it up as viewable to everyone. That there's not much customisation with this isn't a problem at all - I just really need easy to read information so bright white works fine. I had managed to set it up as a nice embedded page, but it quickly disappeared when people said they couldn't see the info and weren't interested in setting an account up.
I guess worst case I could use the spreadsheet as a backup and use table formatting in the forum post to try to keep it a little more rigid.
Thanks for your thoughts and I'll see if I can poke around a little more

Ava
