The following are some of the most significant events of the Third Age of Middle Earth. Included, for the first time, are details of the lives of the hitherto unsung heroes who lived through these years, giving possibly the most complete history of this period to date.

Ohtar, Isildur’s squire, reaches Rivendell with the shards of Narsil.

Arrival of the Istari in Middle-earth.

Sauron begins to take a new form.

Birth of Maegnar.

A shadow falls on Greenwood the Great, and it begins to be called Mirkwood.

 

The Harfoots cross the Misty Mountains and settle in Eriador.

c.1100

The first stirrings of Sauron are felt again in Middle-earth, though they are thought at this time to signal the return of a Nazgûl.

c.1150

The Hobbits of the Fallohide and Stoor strains wander west across the Misty Mountains.

c.1250

Birth of Rhiannon

c.1300

The Hobbits travel westwards. Some reach the Bree-land and settle there. 

c.1300

The Nazgûl reappear in Middle-earth. Angmar is founded in the far north. 

1356

A group of Stoors migrate back eastward across the Misty Mountains, and settle in the Vales of Anduin.

1409

The Witch-king of Angmar invades the northern kingdoms.

1601

The foundation of the Shire, and the beginning of the Shire-reckoning.

1636

The year of the Great Plague, and the appearance of the Barrow-wights in the Barrow-downs.

1640

Seat of the King of Gondor moved from Osgiliath to Minas Anor. The decay of Osgiliath begins.

1731

Birth of Durin VI, later King of Durin’s Folk in Khazad-dûm.

1974

The forces of Angmar capture Fornost; the remnant of the North-kingdom is destroyed.

 

Arvedui, last of the Kings of Arthedain, is drowned in the Icebay of Forochel.

1975

Eärnur of Gondor brings a fleet to the north. Too late to save the North-kingdom, he avenges its loss at the Battle of Fornost. Angmar is destroyed.

1976

The Chieftainship of the Dúnedain is established by Aranarth son of Arvedui.

1980

The Dwarves of Moria unleash Durin’s Bane. King Durin VI is slain by it.

c.1980

Return of the Nazgûl to Mordor.

1981

Náin I is slain. The last remaining Dwarves flee from Durin’s Bane in Khazad-dûm.

 

Galadriel and Celeborn become rulers of Lothlorien following the departure of its lord, Amroth.

 

Maegnar leaves Edhellond.

1999

After years of wandering, the exiles of Khazad-dûm found Erebor.

2000

The Nazgûl emerge from Mordor and assault Minas Ithil.

2002

Capture of Minas Ithil by the Nazgûl. It is renamed Minas Morgul, and Minas Anor is also renamed Minas Tirth, the Tower of Guard.

2050

Eärnur, the last King of Gondor, is lost. The Stewards now rule in the King’s name.

2063

Beginning to suspect that the power in Dol Guldur may be Sauron, Gandalf goes there. Sauron withdraws into the east, and the time known as the Watchful Peace begins.

c.2400

Attack on the Refuge of Edhelion.

c.2440

Estimated birth date of Sméagol, later called Gollum.

2460

The Watchful Peace comes to an end with Sauron’s return out of the east.

2463

Formation of the Council of the Wise.

c.2463

Sméagol finds the One Ring.

2475

Mordor launches a sudden attack on Osgiliath, finally ruining the long-decaying city and breaking its bridge.

c.2480

Sauron sends orcs and trolls to infest the Misty Mountains and cut off their passes, and to occupy the ruins of Moria.

2510

Departure of Elrond’s spouse Celebrían into the West.

 

The Rohirrim ride to the aid of Gondor and are victorious in the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. They are given the land of Calenardhon (Rohan) to dwell in, and Eorl the Young becomes its first King.

Introduction of pipe-weed to the Shire by Tobold Hornblower of Longbottom.

2746

Birth of Thorin, later called Oakenshield, son of King Thráin II.

2747

The Battle of Greenfields is fought in the Northfarthing of the Shire.

2759

Saruman is given the Keys of Orthanc by Steward Beren.

2768

Beginning of Rhiannon’s 100 year silence.

2770

Smaug descends on Erebor, destroying it and the neighbouring town of Dale.

2790

Thrór is slain in Moria by Azog. His son Thráin succeeds as King of Durin’s Folk.

2793

To avenge his father’s death, Thráin II leads the Dwarves against the Orcs: the War of the Dwarves and Orcs begins.

2799

The Battle of Azanulbizar. The War of the Dwarves and Orcs ends with the death of Azog.

 

Death of Nok’s father at the Battle of Azanulbizar.

2802

Dwarves led by Thráin II and Thorin Oakenshield settle in the Blue Mountains

2841

Thráin II sets out from the Blue Mountains, seeking to return to Erebor.

2845

Thráin is captured by Sauron, who thus recovers the last of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves. Unaware of his father’s fate, Thráin’s son Thorin becomes King of Durin’s Folk.

2850

Gandalf enters Dol Guldur once again and discovers Thráin II imprisoned there. Thráin dies soon afterwards, but not before giving Gandalf a map and key.

2851

The White Council discover proof that the Necromancer of Dol Guldur is Sauron returned. Gandalf urges an immediate attack, but Saruman rejects this.

2852

The second White Tree of Minas Tirith dies, and is left standing as the Dead Tree.

2858

Nok leaves the Iron Hills.

2868

Rhiannon’s silence comes to an end.

2878

Nok returns to the Iron Hills having learned gemcraft from the elves.

2879

Birth of Gimli, later called Elf-friend.

2890

Birth of Bilbo Baggins in the Shire. 

2911

Birth of Hrethmund.

2931

Birth of Aragorn II Elessar.

2933

Death of Aragorn’s father Arathorn II. Aragorn is fostered by Elrond at Rivendell under the name Estel.

2941

Expulsion of the Necromancer from Dol Guldur by the White Council.

 

Bilbo Baggins finds the One Ring beneath the Misty Mountains.

 

Bard the Bowman slays the Dragon Smaug.

 

The Battle of Five Armies. Thorin Oakenshield is slain, and his cousin Dáin Ironfoot becomes King of Durin’s Folk

Return of Bilbo Baggins to the Shire

2944

Bard completes the rebuilding of Dale, and is made its King.

 

Gollum sets out from the Misty Mountains in search of his lost Precious.

2948

Birth of Théoden, later King of Rohan

2951

Rebuilding of Barad-dûr begins.

 

The Nazgûl are sent to reclaim Dol Guldur.

 

Elrond reveals Aragorn’s ancestry to him. The first meeting of Aragorn and Arwen, in the woods of Rivendell.

2953

The last meeting of the White Council.

2954

Mount Doom erupts, causing the last remaining people of Ithilien to flee across the Anduin.

2956

Birth of Rose Brownleaf

2957

Aragorn enters the service of Thengel of Rohan, under the alias of Thorongil.

2967

Birth of Goban

2968

Birth of Frodo Baggins in the Shire.

 

Betrothal of Rhiannon to Firdir

2977

Death of Bard the Bowman.

2978

Birth of Boromir, son of Denethor

 

Rhiannon’s family leaves for Grey Havens. Betrothal broken.

2980

‘Thorongil’ (Aragorn) leaves the service of Gondor and travels into the east. He later comes to Lórien, where he meets Arwen again, and the two become betrothed.

 

Birth of Samwise Gamgee.

c.2980

Gollum first encounters Shelob in the Ephel Dúath on Mordor’s western border.

2981

Birth of Raiff

2982

Birth of Meriadoc Brandybuck, later Master of Buckland.

2983

Birth of Faramir, second son of Denethor II.

2984

Death of Steward Ecthelion II. He is succeeded by his son, who rules as Denethor II.

2986

Formation of TSM by the four founders

c.2988

Birth of Berryl

2989

Balin begins his ill-fated attempt to recolonise Moria.

 

Adoption of Frodo Baggins as Bilbo’s heir.

 

Three of the four founders of TSM killed. Rose takes control.

2990

Birth of Peregrin Took.

 

Rhiannon joins TSM

2991

Birth of Éomer, later King of Rohan

2994

Balin’s attempt to recolonise Moria ends in disaster. Balin himself, and the Dwarves of his company, are all slain.

2995

Birth of Éowyn in Rohan.

2996

Birth of Beolaf

2998

Birth of Foxglove

c.3000

Saruman uses the Orthanc-stone for the first time. He comes under the power of Sauron, and abandons his allegiance to the White Council.

3001

Bilbo Baggins’ Birthday Party and farewell feast.

 

Beginning to suspect that Bilbo’s Magic Ring may be Sauron’s One Ring, Gandalf and Aragorn begin to search for Gollum.

3002

Annundril expelled from Lothlorien

3014

Théoden begins to fall ill, and his counsellor Gríma begins to gain power over the King.

3017

Gandalf travels to Minas Tirith, and there discovers the Scroll of Isildur.

 

Gollum is released after several years captive in Mordor. He is soon located and captured by Aragorn, who takes him north to the Woodland Realm.

3018 April

Gandalf returns to the Shire to warn Frodo about the Ring

June

Sauron’s forces attack eastern Gondor and Thranduil’s kingdom in Mirkwood. The War of the Ring begins.

July

Saruman imprisons Gandalf on the pinnacle of Orthanc.

Sept 18

Gwaihir rescues Gandalf from Orthanc.

 

The Black Riders cross the Fords of Isen.

Sept 23

Black Riders reach the Shire.

 

Frodo sets out from Bag-End

Sept 26

The hobbits meet Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.

Sept 28

The hobbits are rescued from the Barrow Wights by Bombadil

Sept 29

Frodo and his companions reach the Prancing Pony in Bree. They meet Strider.

 

Gandalf reaches Hobitton and finds Frodo gone.

Sept 30

Black Riders raid Bree in the early hours.

 

Aragorn leads the hobbits and Bill the Pony into the wild

 

Gandalf reaches Bree at night.

Oct 3

Gandalf is attacked on Weathertop by Black Riders

Oct 6

Black Riders wound Frodo with a Morgul knife beneath Weathertop.

Oct 18

Gandalf reaches Rivendell from the north.

 

Aragorn and the hobbits encounter Gorfindel.

Oct 20

The Black Riders are swept away at the Ford of Bruinen. Frodo reaches Rivendell.

Oct 25

The Council of Elrond.

Dec 25

The Fellowship set out from Rivendell.

3019 Jan 15

Gandalf and the Balrog fall from the Bridge of Khazad-dum

Jan 25

Gandalf casts Durins Bane from the peak of Zirakzigil.

Feb

The Fellowship in Lothlorien.
