So i was getting ready to TR my old ranger who is at the end of his 2nd life into a dual khopesh high DC Favoured Soul having found myself missing having a high DC divine amongst my toons (i went on a melee fvs spree recently and while they're great, sometimes you just can't beat the dc's for solo farming, some quests - i'm looking at you Sleeping Dust - just need them)

Then update 9 comes along and takes a big old power dump on everything i hold sacred in melee casting (yes, i'm talking blade barrier).

After a good review of the gear/tomes/etc on my old ranger, and some careful scrutiny of the new FVS PRE and adjusted affects and costs of different spells and enhancements under the new regime, i beleive i have come up with something that will give me what i want in melee, in dc, and in exploration of what the new pre can do, while qualifying for the free heal and DR capstone we all know and love so much.

I've still taken Extend, as i'm a addicted to good buffs, and my melee buffs are my friend on a setup like this, i don't want to have keep renewing them constantly when i'm bouncing through an elite sins, or keeping some clown alive in VOD that's just run out of resists.

You may notice that empower is missing in the below setup, but if you look at the new PRE i'm only taking a little knock in offensive power without it once i'm a Tier 2 Angel of Vengeance, I know my healing with just maximise will be up to any situation from experience, and i feel that Heighten will be much more advantageous with the low spell cost debuff's and damage spells i'm putting on my modified spell list to really work the new PRE to it's strengths.

So without further ado, here is my take on update 9 as a melee/dc/healing/solo-ing kickass FVS that i'll be rolling out on the 20th of April and levelling through as a third life toon for what will undoubtably be some time after that xD.

Comments are welcome

So do we need to have the spell focus or is that the one of?:
Favored Soul Angel of Vengeance I
  • Prereqs: Level 6 Favored Soul, Favored Soul Smiting II, Favored Soul Energy of the Scion II, and any one of the following: Empower Spell, Maximize Spell, Heighten Spell, Spell Focus: Conjuration, or Spell Focus: Evocation

and any one of the following: Empower Spell, Maximize Spell, Heighten Spell, Spell Focus: Conjuration, or Spell Focus: Evocation ,

Yah, so the spell focus is not a pre-req, as such, it's an either or situation. Empower, or Maximise, or Heighten, or one of those spell foci.

The only real pain in pre-req they've put in is the un-sov requirement for tier 2, and that's not so bad as it's handy sometimes. The smiting level 3 requirement also while not being in most people's builds, is acutally damn handy (i usually pump that tier just for a strong searing light, my little go to 'zap' spell as a divine').

All in all, a much easier set of pre-req's to satisfy then they put together for the raidiant 2 when it came out.

Monk2/18fvs builds are great, i used to have a few myself, and i even got Grey to run one up becuase it fit into his playstyle really well.

Being able to 'stance up' in water stance for extra DC's is a real bonus when having caster fun, and i usually go with elf to take advantage of the racial weapon enhancement lines.

They are particularly good with rapier or scimitar achieving a moderate (but healthy) dps without having to compromise on their casting power, and really shine in raids like Evon where evasion at the pillars is a outstanding thing to have.

The only point on which i'd think about a little change here is with your starting dex, it looks like you are going to sword and board your way up, which while a valid way to go, won't be nearly as much fun (i like to hit stuff! xD) as twf'ing with dual scimi's or rapiers.

Starting with your minimum twf dex (15 with a +2 tome at 17) also gives you a fantastic reflex save (which will make that evasion really work for you), and a genuine usable armour class (with an amour 8 bracer, stanced up in robes with a little bit of gearing) landing somewhere in the 60's making for some seriously easy solo-ing, and making this type of build super hardy for those harder runs with groups (it's so much easier to just concentrate on keeping your quest mates up when you're not taking much damage yourself.

It'll definitely be a fun build to play, i've found using handwraps up to bout lvl 12 or so (when your greensteel will probably take over) is a lot of fun on these builds, and very dps worthy, and at end game they are potent, versatile, and alround damn handy xD.

Have fun running her up mate, i gotta go, work...arg!! i'm late! xD.

Hey Coit,

Thanks for the information.  I've got a different build (more melee focused) till I get to 14, then I switch (Lesser Reincarnate) to the one attached for more of a healer/arcane caster.  Attached is my build till I get to leve 14 (BLADE BARRIER)

I have the DEX for TWF early on plus good STR, but sacrifice it later for the light caster focus (Maxing out WIS).  Unfortunately, my Con/Op item is in my Bracer slot, so not sure I can work the AC build very well?  As for Weapons, I'll most likely be carrying a Sup Pot item in one hand and Skiver in the other once I switch to a caster role.  I'm going to build a Rad 2 Rapier for Melee, when I need it.  Plus it will come in handy in future lives.

I absolutely love evasion.  I've put it in every build I've made for over a year now.  But never played a FvS to get the capstone, so curious if it is worth staying pure?  I guess it truly doesn't matter that much as I'll probably TR again once I cap...

We are probably TR'ing around July 1st, so plenty of time to tweak.  I still need to get a supreme shard from the Shroud, and run a Dreaming Dark to upgrade some ioun stones before I pull the trigger.  I think my cousin needs a shroud shard too.  Then it is back to lowbie status.

Sounds like a fun build, and from what i gather, you know what you like.

I've always felt the secret to being a 'good' player is to recognize your own playstyle, and then aim your characters strengths around that.

From what i can gather that's exactly what you've done with this setup.

As regards the FVS capstone, i've had a few splashed FVS guys (check out my 'Tuskstunner' build on the DDO forums http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=282299&highlight=tuskstunner, Luciforge's 2nd life as a Horc fighter2/18fvs, one of my favourites that was recently TR'd on a 10 life plan in progress at the moment, that managed solo Bastion of Power completions at lvl 17 with zero pot use, no wings, and no torc xD) and the original Luciforge build of course, which was a monk2/18fvs (most of his raid loot was gathered in that life, he was my 2nd attempt at life as an FVS, and extremely succesfull both solo and raiding, loosely based around this setup http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=200561).

But i have to say that these days i do favour the pure FVS, whether it be a LOB melee healer (little Coithealz is on his 2nd life as one of these at the moment, and proving to be one super hardy little fighting healer) or pure human DC offensive casting (Luciforge's 3rd and current life), or even something with flavour (Coitfluff the pure dwarven 20FVS greataxe wielding mid-high DC offensive casting/melee healer, which has been modified quite a bit since first posting it here and on the DDO forums, i tend to tune my characters as i play them, finding in quest/raid play to be the best guide to arriving at the most enjoyable and effective result with my characters).

The best quote i have found that probably says it the way i find it these days is from a fellow called IMPAQT that had this to say :

It comes down to this....
Do you want 1 Extra Attack per Sequence(GTWF) and +5 Damage(With -5 to hit) (PA), Evasion and potential Significant AC Benefit OR DR10/x,+2 CHR, 2 L9 Spells, 1 L8 SPell, and Unlimited Free Healing? I'll leave that decision to you, but I will say I no longer have ANY 18/2 FvS Builds.

Ultimately again i say it comes down to knowing your play style, and constructing your characters to suit this, which i reckon will always result in the most amount of fun for you in game, and the most effectively played characters regardless of what their final 'build' may be.

I'll probably try the 2 monk splash.  The good news is I can always buy a +3 LR and remove the monk levels once I cap out assuming I'm not TR'ing him again...  The only significant advantage to a pure FvS is at level 20 for the captsone from what I see and I have to say it is a really good captsone.

Need to remember to flip my monk to light before Saturday's runs, not that it will matter with the DPS we had/have.
